At the 10th European Conference on Sustainable Cities and Towns that took place last week in Aalborg, Denmark, BwB Associate Tommaso Buso joined other expert panellists from EU Mission Cities and NetZeroCitiesEU partners for an informative session on Investment Plans, the Climate City Capital Hub (Capital Hub), and the experiences of lead cities in drafting Climate City Contracts (CCC).
In the first part of the session, moderated by Tommaso, Agnes Schönfelder, Climate Policy Advisor for EU Mission 100 Climate Neutral and Sustainable Cities and EU Green Deal, Stadt Mannheim; and Maria Granlund, Climate Specialist, Transition and Climate Policy Unit, Turun kaupunki - Åbo stad - City of Turku, explored innovative ways to support city-level climate action, particularly by using CCC as tools to identify funding needs and gaps in cities. Agnes and Maria shared their experiences in building climate transition teams that have a joint focus on climate adaptation and mitigation, the deployment of useful maps for risk visualisation, and what is required to draft a robust investment plan.
The second part of the session, moderated by Jennifer McIntosh, saw Tommaso join Ovidiu CIMPEAN, State Secretary in the Ministry of Investments and European Projects, Romanian Cities National Platform M100 HUB; and Wojciech Deska, Senior Urban Specialist, European Investment Bank, to discuss the role of private investors and public investment banks in increasing capital deployment to climate initiatives by European cities, and how the Capital Hub is working to accelerate these flows.
Allison Lobb, BwB Executive Director, commented: “The scope of the Capital Hub is continuing to expand. It is great to engage with cities that have been through the Investment Plan process and are now working with the Hub to identify and access appropriate sources of financing for their projects.”
Many thanks to Silvia Gugu, ICLEI, for organising the session, and to everyone who attended for making it such a successful event.
Recordings of the session will be posted soon on ICLEI Europe’s YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/@icleieurope/videos
