Reframing Climate Finance: From Ambition to System Reform

We were delighted to recently welcome @Heather Buchanan – CEO of The Athena Foundation, Director of Policy and Strategy at APPG on Sustainable Finance and new BwB Ambassador – as a Talk Series guest speaker.

A leading practitioner working to connect finance, policy, and positive impact for the planet, Heather brings together banks, businesses, policymakers, and regulators to address the complex challenge of translating climate ambitions into deliverable outcomes. Her approach priorities practical reforms across business and finance to build more inclusive, resilient markets that are capable of driving systemic change.

In a wide-ranging discussion, the centrality of narrative, coordination, and proof of concept stood out.

The climate transition is a growth strategy

The transition must be positioned as an economic opportunity, representing innovation, competitiveness, and long-term prosperity. Capital scales when markets recognize the transition as a driver of positive impact, not a constraint on growth.

Alignment and interoperability are missing multipliers

The sustainable finance ecosystem is rich in initiatives but hampered by fragmentation. Misaligned regulatory frameworks and overlapping alliances are creating inconsistent market signals. Without coherence across policy, incentives, and financial architecture, capital will struggle to flow at the pace required.

Energy security is reframing the transition

Heather also spoke about how Ukraine’s experience has reframed decentralized renewable energy as a matter of national resilience. Clean energy is not simply an environmental imperative; it is strategic infrastructure. This shift is reshaping how investors and governments assess risk and long-term value.

We extend our sincere gratitude to Heather for sharing her expertise.
