Sacling Geothermal: Lessons from the World's First Geothermal hub

ree

Geothermal energy is one of the most reliable renewable sources of power, and Larderello, Italy, is where it all began. Today, the region is home to 34 plants and 37 units, collectively representing 800 MW of clean energy production capacity, including a historic 20 MW facility that still operates with its original cooling towers, and Europe’s largest geothermal plant, which generates an impressive 120 MW. As part of its involvement in the GreetGeo Project, BwB recently had the opportunity to tour several plants in Larderello. Insights gained during the visit are strengthening BwB’s work to demonstrate to investors that geothermal is a reliable, viable, and scalable solution when built on the right foundations. Crucial building blocks include:    A stable and supportive regulatory environment  Operators with experience    Reliable offtakers BwB is supporting geothermal investments in regions with strong potential around the world, helping to mobilise the capital needed for climate-aligned, resilient energy systems. A big thank you to Enel Green Power and CoSviG Scrl, especially Loredana Torsello, for hosting us in Larderello. Where do you see the greatest untapped potential for geothermal energy? Share your insights in the comments. Ede Borbely
