As part of the Collaborative for Systemic Climate Action, BwB has been exploring how climate-resilient housing finance can be structured and scaled across India.
Climate shocks can damage homes and disrupt livelihoods across all income groups, but lower-income households are generally far less able to absorb and recover from these events.
Where homes are located, how they are constructed, and a household’s ability to access to financing all influence climate resilience. Informal construction methods can leave homes more vulnerable to damage, while limited access to capital makes it harder to invest in resilience and to rebuild and recover after a shock.
We've mapped housing finance and disaster relief mechanisms across India – with a particular focus on Kerala, Gujarat, and Assam – to understand how existing systems support households and where gaps remain.
This work is designed to support the development of financing structures that can complement India’s existing financial architecture and help make climate-resilient housing more accessible. We are currently testing and refining these approaches with stakeholders working across the housing, climate, and finance ecosystems, learning from their experiences and perspectives.
We’re keen to hear your perspectives and experiences as this work develops. For more information, please reach out to us at [email protected].
