Nature & Biodiversity

The Challenge

Half of global GDP is at risk from nature loss

Nature loss threatens half of global GDP – and the financing needed to address it remains critically short. Recent data puts total finance flows to biodiversity at US$208 billion a year, less than a fifth of the estimated US$1.15 trillion needed by 2030 – a funding gap of US$942 billion.
Closing this gap requires the right financing structures – it also demands a bankable pipeline of investment-ready projects. Capital can be mobilised across the spectrum using a variety of instruments where projects are developed to attract and sustain it.
We work closely with stakeholders in key nature and biodiversity areas to design and apply innovative, outcomes-based solutions, giving our clients and partners the specialist analysis, tools and financial structures needed to deliver on the Sustainable Development Goals and National Biodiversity Strategies and Action Plans.

How BwB Works in Biodiversity & NBS

Financial Instrument and Structure Design

Designing the appropriate instrument for specific projects and contexts, including project finance, liquidity facilities, debt instruments, securitisation, public-private partnerships, and de-risking mechanisms such as guarantees and insurance interventions. This often involves a blended approach, aiming to leverage public capital to mobilise private, impact, and other repayable forms of financing.

Nature-based Solutions (NbS) Market Assessment and Instrument Analysis

Comprehensive assessment of the status of NbS markets. Analysing financial instruments currently used and identifying gaps, as well as advising on how to better incorporate nature into existing instruments and approaches.

Acceleration Support

Providing bespoke technical assistance to develop appropriate business and revenue models, risk registers, KPIs, and financial models to connect nature and biodiversity activities to non-grant and more sustainable forms of financing.
