Improving educational outcomes requires investing not only in learning itself but also in the environments in which children learn, grow, and thrive

Throwback to last year, when the Africa Capital Hub, an initiative of BwB, hosted the 2025 National Workshop on Investing in Rwanda's Future in partnership with the Ministry of Education, Rwanda (MINEDUC) in Kigali to explore strategies for mobilising capital for initiatives that address barriers to effective learning and enhance learning environments.

Participants in the workshop – who included government representatives, multilateral development banks, development finance institutions, philanthropies, and private investors – shared lessons from Rwanda and beyond, explored practical solutions, and discussed how innovative and blended finance approaches could help scale what already works. These insights have helped shape our thinking and actions over recent months in three key areas:

  • School infrastructure: Improving classrooms and facilities to support quality education
  • Clean cooking in schools: Developing practical pathways to transition school kitchens away from traditional biomass fuels
  • School feeding and nutrition: Strengthening programmes that help keep students healthy and focused, and support regular attendance

As Lilian Macharia, Africa Capital Hub Director, comments: "Rwanda is demonstrating that when government, investors, and development partners align around children, meaningful progress is possible."

Many thanks to Hon. Minister Claudette Irere, Minister of State for Education, MINEDUC, all speakers, and partners who contributed to such a thoughtful and consequential conversation at the Workshop – the impact has extended well beyond the event.
