What does it take to finance nature at scale?

This question sparked lively discussion during Session 1 of the Financing Nature Capacity Building Workshop Series, where participants explored innovative nature finance instruments and their potential to mobilise capital for biodiversity and conservation initiatives.

Led by Heather Matson, BwB’s Global Head of Nature & Biodiversity Finance, and Gabija Zdanceviciute (University College Dublin), the session introduced emerging financing approaches while addressing some of the practical challenges facing project developers and issuers.

A recurring theme throughout the discussion was the challenge of demonstrating nature-related performance. Participants highlighted how limited data availability can make it difficult to evidence impact, build investor confidence, and, ultimately, raise capital for nature-focused projects.

The session also explored practical measures that can help strengthen investor trust, including:

  • Robust bond framework development
  • Clear eligibility and exclusion criteria
  • Transparent impact measurement
  • Regular allocation and impact reporting

The high level of engagement among participants demonstrated the growing market interest in innovative financial mechanisms that can help bridge the financing gap for nature and biodiversity projects.

Join us in London on 22 June at the Aga Khan Foundation for an in-person workshop to continue the conversation with peers and experts working to advance nature finance solutions.
